The Alchemical Process
in The Secret of the Golden Flower

4 Wednesday Evenings
Oct 26 & Nov. 2, 9, & 16
7:30 - 9:00 pm
Cost: $60
Led by Jean Norelli

It was reading The Secret of the Golden Flower which Richard Wilhelm forwarded to Carl Jung in 1928 that interested Jung in how his own experiences during his "dark night of the soul" belonged to the ancient tradition of alchemy. At that point Jung began his study of alchemical texts. Their similarity to the concepts of analytical psychology occupied him for the rest of his life. He felt this ancient tradition gave validity to his understanding of psychological processes. We will read this book and in discussion ponder how what it describes can be translated into our own spiritual and psychological lives.

This class will make more sense if it is preceded by attending "The Alchemical Process in Everyday Life", but that is not essential. It is essential that you read the text. Although there are several good current versions, we will be using the original, The Secret of the Golden Flower A Chinese Book of Life, translated by Richard Wilhelm with a commentary by C.G. Jung, originally published by Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., New York.

Jean Norelli is a thirty-year scholar of Jung who enjoys the difficulties in translating his more obscure writings into something that makes everyday sense. She has taught classes in understanding Jung in clinical contexts and has been leading a group reading Jung's Collected Works for the past eight years. Jean works with people in her consulting practice around issues that focus on creativity and individuation.
