Workshops Classes and Seminars

THE WILD GEESE, THE WORLD, AND YOUR IMAGINATION
--a poetry writing workshop

Eight Monday mornings, January 6 to March 10 (no class January 20 or February 17), 10:00 a.m. to noon, led by Lynn Trombetta, B.A.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting---
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

--Mary Oliver

No one asks us to pay attention quite like Mary Oliver, who asks us to marry our imaginations to the world and to our place in the family of things.
In this workshop we will use her New and Selected poems to inspire and inform our own poetry writing. As always we will focus on the poem's content, and on those poetic behaviors (metaphor, imagery, music, line-break, syntax, etc.) which craft our poems into works of mind as well as heart. We will study and appreciate many of the poems of this fine, Pulitzer Prize winning poet; we will write new poems of our own, and strengthen our imaginations and our place in the family of things.
Lynn Trombetta holds two teaching credentials and a B.A. in English from SSU. She has studied under major contemporary American poets and brings their insights to her workshops. Her first poetry collection has recently been accepted for publication by Sixteen Rivers Press. Her work has appeared in The Sun, CALYX, Runes, Atlanta Review, and other poetry journals.

Cost: $115. Includes a small materials fee. Participants are asked to purchase their own copy of Mary Oliver's New and Selected Poems (1992) and bring it to class each week. Class limited to 10 participants. Please make reservations.
